Following All The Rules And Not Asking Why

This illustration was done for an article about how society can sometimes call anyone who enlists in the army a hero, even though heroes should be considered people who go above and beyond the call of duty. So the question becomes; who do we consider a hero?

I have the finished illustration here, as well as some of my other ideas/ composition studies/ and a linear.

Living In The Sprawl

It's been a while since I've posted. First time since getting the blog that I missed posting anything for a month. Things had gotten ridiculously busy near the end of the semester, and I've been working diligently on Traded Stars, so art has been going up somewhere, if not here.

This piece was a business assignment where we had to create a product, come up with a company name (White Night in this case) and create a business plan. I modified a lantern with scenes from the suburbs.

You've Probably Gone Too Far

If a blog wasn't enough, you can follow me on twitter at; http://twitter.com/_StevenHughes_
Yay for social networking... Wait for a twitter update about this blog post about twitter updates. And because I don't feel right posting without a little something other than words strung together, here's a preview of tomorrow's comic page (to be posted Friday 12:01 AM)

They Were Kids That I Once Knew

I've created a webcomic which you can check out at the above site. I've been working on the website and the comic almost nonstop the past month and a half; it's finished now, updates three times a week and as of this writing, I have 6 pages posted.
This is a little info illustration that will give you an idea about what the comic is about and who the characters are. This image can also be found on the 'New Readers' page of the website.

Don't Believe A Word That I Haven't Heard

Assignment two for narrative class.
Figure I could use the class as a chance to do small scale experiments with storytelling and drawing style. Just a time to have fun for me.

All The Voices Sound Just Like You

This was for an assignment in my Narrative Class. Had to create four panels that included either 'What's that supposed to mean?' or 'Are you alright?'
For my final I used characters from my thesis (the thesis project being the big project all fourth year illustrators at Sheridan work on for the year), and an assignment from another class I'm actually not in. Another professor told his students to work the theme of good and evil into one piece of their thesis, and if they couldn't do it, then it probably wasn't a very strong thesis to begin with. I thought it was worth trying out... So I got to kill two birds with one stone.

Also, I included my original rough/ thumbnail of the final and of my other two ideas below.

Risk Everything For A Glimpse Of Accidental Light

Second (and last) assignment for my computer class this semester. A lot of things got reworked and flat out cut so I could finish this on time. The story suffers a little (a lot) for it, but its finished. Each part I tried animating a little differently from one another, not so much that its too jarring, but enough so I could at least experiment.

The idea was to be an intro to a film, one that would actually be a prologue to the third act of a space opera. This guy's story exists in my head, as well as all the acts built around it.

Wide-Eyed Walker, Don't Betray Me

Completed graphic design assignment for a kid's juice label and a poster to go along with it, plus all my roughs.
The one of the words making the shape of the fox is my favourite, something to do with the creepiness of it, but it may not have been the strongest or most appropriate.
The finals aren't perfect, but they are what I handed in.

We're The Same, Oh But In A Different Way

Business card designs for a Graphic Design assignment. In the end since it was not a real business card for me, I didn't worry about selling the illustration part of things, but rather just making an interesting looking business card.

Also, a lot of the process business cards on the way to this finished one.

You Aren't Even Who You Said You Are

For an assignment on mail scams. This one involved a man who recently passed away - he and his son were killed in train bombings, while his wife died a week later of a heart attack. The man had no next of kin otherwise, so instead of all his riches being turned over to the government, for a respectable and fair fee, the accountant could change the will to include you in it, and the two of you (you and the accountant) could share in the spoils.

Where Do You Intend To Go Tonight?

A Recipe.
An image of friends on a night out drinking and the variant underneath. It was for an assignment to come up with a recipe that somehow connected to college, and this is a big part of my college experience.
